John Bateman

Born near Halifax. Civil engineer. Built canals and reservoirs. Died at home, Moor Park, Farnham.

Uncle to Charles La Trobe (1801-75), who travelled widely and became Governor of the colony of Victoria, Australia. La Trobe returned to the UK in 1954 and we are not aware of any memorials to him here, so normally our interest would be negligible, but at La Trobe University in Melbourne there is a , upside down. Worth a note, we think. La Trobe's family was closely associated with the Fetter Lane Moravian Congregation.

The is a good source of information on Charles La Trobe.
