John Bennet Lawes

John Bennet Lawes

Entrepreneur and agricultural scientist. Born at Rothamsted, Hertfordshire. He founded an experimental farm that eventually became the Rothamsted Experimental Station, and developed a superphosphate that formed the beginnings of the chemical fertiliser industry. In the 1850s he built the village of Creekmouth in Barking, to house the workers in his nearby chemical factory.
