John Butler Yeats

Artist. Born in Tullyish, County Down. Father of William Butler and John 'Jack' Butler Yeats. He had a short-lived careeer as a lawyer, before turning to painting. He specialised in portraiture, and his painting of John O'Leary is considered to be his masterpiece. In 1907 he moved to the U.S.A. where he became involved with the Ashcan School of painters. Died in New York City. This picture is a self-portrait.
