John Hearn

John Hearn

Conservationist. Born in Wapping hospital and known as Ernie. A printer until retirement. He moved to the Waterloo area in the 1960s and found there was a lack of open spaces for walking his dog. The Thames foreshore provided an answer, but he became aware that it was being lost to developers.

He joined the Coin Street Action Group and campaigned for affordable housing, open spaces and leisure uses for this area. He persuaded the Greater London Council to drop its requirement to build out to the Port of London Authority line, resulting in the sandy beach that can be seen today. See the plaque for some of the organisations in which he was involved.

Our colleague, Andrew Behan, states that he was born on 21 November 1931 and that when his birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1931 in the Stepney Registration District, London, his mother's maiden surname was recorded as Muscovitch.

The  shows the 14 appointments he held in various organisations and electoral registers from 2003 to 2018 show him listed at 80 Stamford Street, London, SE1 9NH.

He died, aged 89 years, on 22 March 2021.
