Born Helmut Herzfeld in the outskirts of Berlin. Changed his name in 1917 in protest at the anti-British feelings in Germany. Fleeing the Nazis in 1938 he came to England where he was interned for a time as an enemy alien after which he settled in Hampstead (at the house with the plaque). Returned to London in 1967 to prepare for a retrospective at the ICA. His best known works are political photomontages. Died in East Berlin.
