Australian explorer. Born Scotland. Trained as a civil engineer and aged 23 emigrated to Australia where 1858 - 62 he made 6 expeditions into the interior searching out new pastures and surveying the land. The first explorer to cross Australia - from North Adelaide to a point near Darwin, has a map showing his route. His health was ruined and he returned to Britain in about 1862, dying, unmarried, at the house with the plaque.
