John Pattison, VC

Soldier. Born John George Pattison. He emigrated to Canada where he enlisted to fight in WW1. He was posted to France, and on the 10th April 1917 he fought in the battle of Vimy Ridge. The advance of the Canadian troops was held up by enemy machine-gun fire, but regardless of his own safety he sprang forward, and leaping from shell-hole to shell-hole got to within thirty yards of the gun. He hurled bombs which killed and wounded some of the crew, then rushed forward bayoneting the surviving gunners. For his actions he was awarded the Victoria Cross medal. He was later killed in action at Lens.
