Painter and sculptor. Born John Rattenbury Skeaping in South Woodford, Essex. He studied at Goldsmith's College, the Central School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Royal Academy. In 1924 he won the British Prix de Rome. He was a member of the London Group 1928-34, joined the Seven and Five Society in 1932 and later worked for a period in Mexico. Elected to the Royal Academy in 1960. He was the first husband of Barbara Hepworth who is with him in this c.1928 photo.
