John Wisden

John Wisden

Cricketer and publisher. Born at Crown Street, Brighton. As a cricketer, he played mainly for Sussex. In 1850 he opened a cricket-equipment business in Leamington Spa and five years later opened a "cricket and cigar" shop at 2 New Coventry Street (the east-most section of Coventry Street, at Leicester Square). He retired from cricket in 1863 and started publishing his annual Cricketers' Almanack the following year. In 1872 he moved the business to 21 Cranbourn Street and had his home in the accommodation above, which is where he died.
