Jonathan Geach Tinner was born in 1847 in Tywardreath, Cornwall, the second of the three children of Richard Tinner (1806-1891) and Mary Ann Tinner née Blowey (1819-1905). His birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1847 in the St Austell registration district, Cornwall. He was baptised on 14 March 1847 in Tywardreath, Cornwall.
In the 1851 census he is shown a scholar, aged 4 years, and living in Polkerris, Tywardreath, Cornwall, with his parents, his two siblings: Thomas Blowey Tinner (1844-1920) and Mary Ann Tinner (1849-1924), together with his maternal grandmother Ann Blowey née Halls (b.1780). His father was described as a mason whilst his grandmother was listed as 'Go out nursing'.
He was still listed as a scholar in the 1861 census residing in the parish of Tywardreath, Cornwall, with his parents and his elder brother. His father was shown as stone mason and his brother as pupil teacher.
On 28 July 1873 he married Mary Heath (1851-1920) in the Parish Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle, Church Street, Tywardreath, Par, Cornwall, where in the marriage register he is shown as a bachelor and a school master from Tywardreath, whilst his wife was show as a spinster also from Tywardreath, the daughter of Joshua Heath, a chief boatman.
In the 1881 census he is described as a certified teacher living in St Jude's School House, Highbury, Islington, London, with his wife. Also residing there was his brother and his wife, Caroline Tinner née Ford (b.1844), their three children: Mildred Mary Tinner (b.1872); Thomas Tinner (b.1874) and Caroline Rose Tinner (1880-1959), together with a female domestic servant. His brother was also shown as a certified teacher.
Electoral registers from 1887 to 1895 show him listed at St Judes schools, Queen Margarets Grove, Islington. On 11 June 1898 he was initiated as a Freemason into the Cornish Lodge No.2369 that met at Mark Masons Hall, Great Queen Street, London, WC2, whose records show that he was a schoolmaster living in Mildmay Park, London.
He was shown as a head teacher in the 1901 census, residing at 3 St Jude's Schoolhouses, King Henry's Walk, Islington, with his wife and electoral registers from 1906 to 1908 list him at School house, King Henry's Walk, Islington. When he completed his 1911 census return form he described himself as an L.C.C. Teacher living in a 5 roomed property called Mildmay Lodge, King Henry's Walk, Mildmay Grove, London N, with his wife.
He died, aged 64 years, on 23 September 1911, his death being registered in the 3rd quarter of 1911 in the Islington registration district. Probate records confirm his address to have been St Jude's Schoolhouse, Mildmay Park, Middlesex and that when probate was granted to his widow on 2 November 1911 his effects totalled £1,260-7s-3d.
