Jonathan Rashleigh

Born Wiltshire into a wealthy family. First class cricketer. Married Mary Pole Stuart in 1843 and Jane Elizabeth Pugh in 1869. In 1873 he was listed as the largest landowner in Cornwall. Died Menabilly, Fowey, Cornwall. Menabilly is a mansion owned by the Rashleigh family since the 1560s. Jonathan improved and enlarged the Menabilly grounds but on his death the estate passed to his grandson, John Rashleigh, who did not live there and allowed it to fall into disrepair. It was then discovered by Daphne du Maurier who took a lease in 1943, restored it and lived there until 1969 when the Rashleighs took responsibility again. Du Maurier wrote about the house at least twice: in 1946 'The King's General' and 1938 'Rebecca' ("Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again").

gives his address as 3 Cumberland Terrace but with no dates, so he could still have been living at 31 Hill Street, Berkeley Square in 1865, as indicated on the memorial.
