Joseph Cotton

Joseph Cotton FRS was a mariner and merchant, a director of the East India Company, Chairman of the East India Dock Company and deputy-master of Trinity House.

Born St Albans.  Briefly in the Royal Navy but joined the East India Company instead. Made a fortune from two voyages as captain and then retired and lived the rest of his life in Leyton, living at Leyton House 1789-1803, and in Walnut Tree House (became Essex Hall, and 2024, Walnut Tree House in Jesse Road Leyton) beginning in 1813.

Elder Brother and then Deputy Master of Trinity House. Director of the East India Company 1795-1823. Director of the East India Docks Company (chairman in 1803-06, at least).

Father of William, Benjamin and John Cotton, who became Chairman of the East India Company. Died in Leyton.
