From the information given by Dugald Gonsal which is shown on our Memorial entry for the South End Road bridge (that this man's first name was Ken), our colleague Andrew Behan believes he has found the person concerned.
Kenneth Paul Harman was born on 31 January 1910, his birth being registered in the 1st quarter of 1910 in the Dover registration district, Kent. In the 1911 census he was shown as living in a five room property at Greenway, Shipton Gorge, Bridport, Dorset, with his mother Ella Harman (1880-1951), who was an elementary school mistress employed by Dorset County Council. He attended Dover County Secondary School from September 1920 to January 1926.
On 4 January 1926, aged 15 years, he enlisted in the Royal Navy as an Artificer's Apprentice, service number M.X.45232, and served at , a shore based training establishment at Portsmouth, Hampshire. On reaching his 18th birthday, on 31 January 1928, he signed on for 12 years service and on 2 August 1928 he was transferred to , another shore establishment.
Whilst undergoing his Royal Navy apprenticeship, he attended an evening school where he studied English, Mathematics, Mechanics, Electricity, Engineering, Workshop Practice and Machine Drawing, obtaining a 1st Class Pass at his Passing Out Examination. He became an Engine Room Artificer 5th Class aboard before being promoted there as a Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in August 1930.
He purchased his discharge from the Royal Navy in July 1931 and in September 1932 he proceeded to London University to obtain an engineering degree.
In the 4th quarter of 1935 he married Gladys M. Moore (b.1910) in the Paddington registration district and in the 1939 England and Wales Register they are both shown as living at 6 Well Hall Road, Woolwich, SE18. His occupation is listed as a professional civil engineer and his wife was described as a housewife.
On 31 August 1942 he enrolled in the 62nd County of Lancaster (Burney) Battalion of the Home Guard. The battalion register shows his home address to have been 33 Albert Street, Padiham, Burnley, Lancashire and that his wife's name was recorded as Mary Harman. He was discharged on 22 June 1943.
Telephone directories list a K. P. Harman at 9 Carlingford Road, London, NW3 from 1956 to 1983 and his death, aged 88 years, was registered in September 1998 in the Camden registration district.
