Lilian Faithfull

Lilian Faithfull

English teacher, headmistress, women's rights advocate, magistrate, social worker and humanitarian.

Born Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, she graduated with a first in English at Oxford University in 1887, at a time when they refused to confer degrees upon women, so she had to claim her degree from Trinity College Dublin under the 'ad eundem' arrangements.

Lecturer at Royal Holloway College, 1889-4. King's College London, vice-principal of the Ladies Department, 1895-1907. Principal of Cheltenham Ladies' College 1907-22. 1920, she became Justice of the Peace for Cheltenham, becoming one of the first women magistrates in England.

She was Vice President of the Shoreditch Hackney & Highbury Housing Association, though we cannot find dates for that role. The Association was still active in 1955.

She founded the Old People's Housing Society in Cheltenham, later renamed the Lilian Faithfull Homes, and spent the last few months of her life in the care of one of the homes, Faithfull House.
