Lilian Sarah Seymour

Born Lilian Sarah Wheatley on 15 July 1895 in Westminster, the third of seven children of George Wheatley and Elizabeth Sarah Wheatley. Her father was a porter and caretaker of the Sloane Court Flats.

The 1901 census shows her living at 3 Sloane Court, Chelsea, with her parents and three siblings whilst the 1911 census shows her occupation as millinery, living at 1 Sloane Court, Chelsea, with her parents and five siblings.

On 8 June 1929 she married Ernest William Seymour (1900-1968) at St Barnabas Church, Pimlico. The marriage register shows he was an Assistant Relieving Officer living at 57 Coleshill Buildings, Pimlico and she was living at 1 Sloane Court.

The England and Wales 1939 Register shows her as a Milliner at 1 Sloane Court East, Chelsea, with her widowed mother and younger brother Charles Henry Wheatley.

She died, aged 48 years, as a result of enemy action when a V1 bomb fell on their home at 1 Sloane Court East, London, SW3. Probate records read 'Seymour Lillian Sarah otherwise Lilian of 1 Sloane Court, Lower Sloane Street, Chelsea (wife of Ernest W. Seymour) who is believed to have been killed through war operations on 3 July 1944 and whose dead body was found on 8 July 1944 at 1 Sloane Court'. Administration (with a will) was granted to her brother Charles Henry Wheatley, a GPO engineer, on 19 September 1944. Her estate totalled £256-18s-11d.

She is also commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey, London.
