Lord Ashfield

Transport organizer and politician. Born Albert Henry Knattriess at New Normanton, Derbyshire. His family moved to the USA in 1880 and changed their surname to Stanley. While working for various transport companies, he raised money to electrify London's Metropolitan District Railway. He moved to Britain in 1907, and in 1910 became managing director of the fledgling London underground system, and the creator of London Transport for which he was celebrated as Lord Straphanger. He entered parliament in 1916 and became President of the Board of Trade. Knighted in 1914, made a Privy Counsellor in 1916 and created Baron Ashfield in 1920. Died at 31 Queen's Gate, Kensington.
