Lord Charles Portal

Marshal of the RAF. Born Hungerford. Served in WWI first as a motorcycle despatch rider and then joined the Royal Flying Corps and became a pilot. Promoted rapidly and well-decorated. Chief of the Air Staff, 1940 - 1945, he went with Churchill to the major conferences. Promoted to Marshal of the Royal Air Force in 1944. One of the architects of victory in the WW2. Died near Chichester.
