{On the back a smooth plaque is carved from the rough stone plinth:}
Marshal of the Royal Air Force, the Viscount Portal of Hungerford, KG, GCB, OM, DSO, MC. 1893 - 1971. Chief of the Air Staff, 1940 - 1945. One of the architects of victory in the Second World War.

Unveiled by Harold Macmillan.
