North and his sister, Lady Cynthia Williams, were killed on the Dover coast near the family home, Waldershare Park, when they trod on a land mine. Lady North was with them and was seriously injured. The party were taking a walk at the time in a prohibited area, protected with barbed wire but without any 'danger' signs.
