Lord Nuffield, William Morris

Motor manufacturer and philanthropist. Born Worcester. Began work in a bicycle shop and designed the first Morris car in 1912. Founder of the Morris Motor Company and founder of the Nuffield Foundation and Nuffield College, Oxford. Although he married he had no children so his funds were available for endowments, etc., and, on his death at his Oxfordshire home, Nuffield Place, Nuffield, he was the last as well as the first Lord Nuffield.
