Bruce Bernard Weatherill, Baron Weatherill, KStJ, PC, DL, was born on 25 November 1920, the son of Bernard Bruce Weatherill (1883-1962) and Annie Gertrude Weatherill née Creak (1886-1966). Both he and his twin sister, Margery W. Weatherill (1920-1998), births were registered in the 4th quarter of 1920 in the Chertsey registration district, Surrey. His younger sister was Barbara Elizabeth Weatherill (1923-2003).
His gives much detail about this man. Our research shows that he described himself as a tailor on the manifest of the MV Derbyshire of the Bibby Line which landed at the Port of London, Tilbury, on 25 September 1938 having embarked as a 1st class passenger at Colombo, Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka). His address was recorded as Inglemount, Guildown, Guildford, Surrey. He was also shown as travelling with his father, again as a 1st Class passengers aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth from New York, USA, arriving at Southampton, Hampshire, on 31 October 1946. They were both shown as tailors, giving their residence as Warren Lodge, Warren Road, Guildford, Surrey. The 1946 electoral registers show him listed in Warren Road, Guildford with his parents and younger sister, but the 1949 electoral registers state that his and his parents address was 7 Longdown Road, Merrow, Guildford.
He married Daphne I. Lyn Eatwell (b.1928) in the 3rd quarter of 1949 in the Westminster registration district and electoral registers from 1950 to 1955 show him and his wife at Dapdune Lea, Dapdune Wharf Road, Guildford, but from 1956 to 1962 they were at 26 Downside Road, Guildford. Telephone directories from 1962 to 1970 show him as a subscriber at Tyting Glen, Halfpenny Lane, St Mathias, Guildford.
The dated 8 January 1980 states that HM The Queen was to make him a Privy Councillor (PC).
Upon his retirement as Speaker of the House of Commons he was created as Baron Weatherill of North East Croydon in the London Borough of Croydon. The dated 5 June 1992 showed his achievements as 'Speaker of the House of Commons 1983-92. Managing Director of Bernard Weatherill Ltd. 1957-70. M.P.(C.) Croydon N.E. 1964-83 (When elected Speaker); a Lord Comr. of H.M. Treasury 1970-71; Vice Chamberlain, H.M. Household, 1971-72; Comptroller of H.M. Household, 1972-73; Treasurer of H.M. Household and Deputy Chief Whip, 1973-74; Opposition Deputy Chief Whip, 1974-79; Chairman of Ways and Means and Deputy Speaker, 1979-83.
In 1994 he was made a Deputy Lieutenant in the County of Kent entitling him to use the Post Nominal Letters DL for life. Electoral registers in 2005 show him and his wife listed at Flat 15 St Michael's, Wolf's Row, Oxted, RH8 0QL. He died, aged 86 years, on 6 May 2007.
