Marie-Louise Christophe

First and only queen of Haiti.

Born Marie-Louise Coidavid into a free black family. In 1793 she married Henri Christophe, a slave purchased by her father who owned a hotel. According to legend Henri purchased his freedom with the tips he earnt at the hotel.  He was a key leader in the Haitian Revolution and In 1811 declared the northern state of Haïti a kingdom and had himself crowned, at which Marie-Louise became queen.

Henri died in 1820, and in 1821 Marie-Louise travelled with her daughters to London. She spent the rest of her life in Pisa.
