John Maitland Salmond was born on 17 July 1881 the youngest of the five children of Major-General (1840-1932) and Emma Mary Hoyle Salmond née Hoyle (1849-1923). (His mother's maiden name was Emma Mary Hoyle Hoyle). His four siblings were: Emma Margaret Salmond (1875-1959); Mary Gwendolen Salmond (1877-1958); William Jeffrey Hanson Salmond (1878-1933) and Gladys Muriel Salmond (1879-1959).
His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1881 in the Kensington registration district, London. On 28 August 1881 he was baptised at St Jude's Church, South Kensington, where the baptismal register shows the family living at 45 Redcliffe Gardens, West Brompton, London and that his father was described a Major, Royal Engineers.
He is shown as aged 9 years in the 1891 census at the Norfolk Hotel, Harrington Road, South Kensington, with his parents. His father was listed as a Colonel, Royal Engineers.
He was recorded as aged 19 years and a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Lancashire Regiment in the 1901 census living in barracks at the School of Musketry, Hythe, Kent.
In the 1911 census he was shown as aged 29 years and a Captain in the 2nd Battalion, The King's Own Royal Lancashire Regiment living in the Greve De Lecq Barracks, Le Mont De St. Marie, St Mary, Jersey, Channel Islands.
He married Helen Amy Ivy Lumsden (1881-1916) in 1913 in the parish church of Upavon, Wiltshire. His wife died on 8 May 1916 whilst giving birth to their daughter, Helen Amy Joy Lumsden Salmond (1916-1984) in Marylebone, London.
He married the Honourable Monica Margaret Grenfell (1893-1973) on 2 June 1924 in St Margaret's Church, Westminster, London, where in the marriage register he is described as both a widower and Air Marshall RAF, living at 6 Dean Farrar Street, Westminster & of Whaddon, Bruton, Somerset, the son of Major General Sir William Salmond, KCB. His wife was shown as a spinster living at Taplow Court, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of William Henry Grenfell, Baron Desborough, a Peer of the Realm. They were to have two children: John Julian William Salmond (1926-2006) and Rosemary Laura Salmond (1928-1991).
Probate records confirm that he died, aged 87 years, on 16 April 1968 and his death was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1968 in the Eastbourne registration district, Sussex. Probate was granted on 1 November 1968 and his effects totalled £10,244.
