Mary Gillick

Sculptor and medallist. Mary Gaskell Gillick OBE, née Tutin. Born Nottingham. Best known for her effigy of Elizabeth II used on UK coinage 1953-70. 1905, she married Ernest Gillick, whom she had met when they were both studying at Nottingham School of Art. Appointed OBE in the 1953 Coronation Honours. Died at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital.

The couple came to Chelsea from Nottingham c.1903, leasing Moravian Close from the Moravian Church in 1913 and living in the Manse 1914-64. They often collaborated and formed a dynamic partnership that enriched both their careers.

We were very pleased to find this photo, showing Mary in the pergola to the south of the burial ground with the studios in the background. At it is captioned "Mary Gillick in the grounds of her home in Chelsea holding a plaster model for the new coinage, 1952, photograph, British Museum."
