Meredith White Townsend

Journalist. Born in Bures, Suffolk. In 1848 he went to India and became editor of 'The Friend of India'. Returning to England in 1860, he jointly, with Richard Holt Hutton, purchased The Spectator and became its editor. They remained its co-proprietors and joint editors for 25 years.
