Michael Portillo

Michael Portillo

Journalist, broadcaster and former M.P. and cabinet minister. Born Michael Denzil Xavier Portillo. He unexpectedly lost his safe seat of Enfield Southgate at the 1997 general election, which led to the expression 'A Portillo moment'. He unsuccessfully stood for the leadership of the Conservative party in 2001, and retired from the Commons in 2005. He now presents and takes part in a wide range of television and radio programmes.
