Mrs A. M. Hallett

Mrs A. M. Hallett

Alderman in the Borough of Hammersmith in 1948.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has researched this woman: Mrs Alice Mabel Hallett was born about 1887 and the first record I could find about her was on the Electoral Register of 1922 when she was living at 6 Adelaide Road, Shepherds Bush, W12, with a James Hallett and a James Hallett (Junr). (This road had its name change in the 1930's to its current name of Adelaide Grove). In 1930 the records show them still there, but a Jane Hallett was now also registered to vote. From 1933 there was only one James Hallett at the address. In 1936 the family moved to 63 Aldbourne Road, W12 and she was to remain there for the rest of her life. The 1939 edition of Kelly's Directory of Hammersmith shows her as a councillor for the Wormholt Ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith. Her husband, James Hallett, died on 3 November 1945 and his estate totalled £919-7s-8d, probate being granted to Jane Hallett, described as a spinster. By 1948 she was an alderman serving on the Town Planning Committee, but never held the office of Mayor. She died on 24 May 1957, aged 70 years, at Hammersmith Hospital, Du Cane Road, W12 and her estate totalled £3,027-6s-0d, probate being granted to a William James Fowler, a civil servant.
