Nathaniel William Hubbard

Trustee of the Lambeth Hayles Estate development in 1894.

Expanding on the information contained on , Nathaniel William Hubbard was born in 1846, the son of John Hubbard and Mary Ann Hubbard. His birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1846 in the Lambeth Registration District, Surrey (now Greater London). On 25 October 1846 he was baptised at St Matthew's Church, Brixton Hill, Brixton, Surrey (now Greater London), where in the baptismal register his family are shown to be living in Regent Row, Brixton and that his father was a bricklayer.

In the census that was undertaken on 30 March 1851 he is shown as Nathaniel Wm. Hubbard, aged 4 years and a scholar living in Regent Row, Brixton, with his widowed mother who was aged 31 years and whose occupation was listed as washing and charing, together with four siblings who were all scholars: Sarah Jane Hubbard, aged 10 years; John Thomas Hubbard, aged 9 years; Mary Ann Hubbard, aged 6 years and Alice Elizabeth Hubbard, aged 1 year.

In the census that was compiled on 7 April 1861 he was shown as aged 14 years and a groom, living at 27 Regent Row, with his widowed mother who was aged 41 years and a laundress, together with four siblings: John Hubbard, aged 19 years; Mary Ann Hubbard, aged 16 years - a servant; Alice Elizabeth Hubbard, aged 11 years - a scholar and Frederick Hubbard, aged 2 years.

On 17 October 1867 he married Matilda Parsons (1846-1940) at St Matthew's Church, Brixton Hill, where in the marriage register he is shown as aged 21 years, a bachelor and an agent residing in Brixton, the son of John Hubbard, a bricklayer, whilst his wife was described as aged 21 years and a spinster, also residing in Brixton, the daughter of Thomas Parsons, a carpenter.

In the census that was completed on 2 April 1871 he was described as aged 24 years and an agent to a Friendly Society, living in rooms at 42 Clapham Park Road, Clapham, Surrey (now Greater London), with his wife and their daughter Matilda Alice Hubbard (1870-1932).

He is shown as aged 34 years and an assurance agent in the census that was taken on 3 April 1881. He was residing at 44 Ferndale Road, Stockwell, Surrey (now Greater London), with his wife and their three children: Matilda Alice Hubbard; Nathaniel William Hubbard (b.1871) and Ellen Bertha Hubbard (1873-1890) who were all listed as scholars, together with his sister-in-law Emily Parsons, aged 28 years - a domestic servant.

The census that was obtained on 31 March 1891 lists him as aged 44 years and a coal merchant occupying 70 Railton Road, Brixton, London, with his wife and their two surviving children: Matilda Alice Hubbard who was a student at college and Nathaniel William Hubbard who was an articled clerk. Also present was his niece Emily Parsons, aged 16 years and a shop assistant.

On the night of 31 March 1901 when the  census return was recorded he is described as aged 54 years, a coal merchant and member of the London County Council. He and his wife were shown at 16 Retreat Road, Prittlewell, Essex, the home of Chalton Hubbard - aged 29 years and a solicitor together with his wife, Eliza Frances M. Hubbard née Saker (1870-1904) and their son Ronald Ewart Hubbard (1899-1918). The census return form clearly shows him and his wife as the father and mother of Chalton Hubbard and as no trace can be found of a birth of a Chalton Hubbard, it is believed that this man was originally born as Nathaniel William Hubbard and changed his name to Chalton Hubbard.

When he completed his census return form on 2 April 1911 he described himself as aged 64 years and a company director residing in a nine roomed property at 41 Chestnut Road, West Norwood, London, with his wife, their daughter, Matilda Alice Hubbard, together with Elizabeth Ann Davies, aged 19 years, who was their female domestic servant. When he completed the form he showed that his wife had given birth to three children but that only two were still alive. This tends to confirm that his son Nathaniel William Hubbard had changed his name to Chalton Hubbard.

On the census return form, which he completed 19 June 1921, he showed himself as aged 75 years, 2 months, a retired coal merchant living in an eight roomed property at 41 Chestnut Road, West Norwood, London, SE27, with his wife who was a housewife aged 74 years, 9 months and their daughter, Matilda Alice Hubbard, who was described as aged 51 years, 4 months and not occupied for a living.

His death was registered as aged 83 years in the 4th quarter of 1929 in the Lambeth Registration District, London. Probate records confirm his address had been 41 Chestnut Road, West Norwood and that he died on 20 November 1929. shows that he was buried on 25 November 1929 in the Lambeth District. Probate was granted on 16 January 1930 to Chalton Hubbard, a solicitor and his effects totalled £8,407-10s-10d.

He is shown as 'NATHANIEL W. HUBBARD' on the Hayles Estate - Lambeth memorial plaque at 34 Hayles Street, London SE11.
