Nightingale Badge - Old

The badge was awarded to nurses who qualified from the Nightingale School at St Thomas's Hospital. Designed by Dame Alice Lloyd Still (who was matron at St Thomas's), the four arms of the cross symbolise the virtues of prudence, temperence, justice and fortitude. A portrait of Florence Nightingale with the words 'Schola Sancti Thomae' is at the centre. Badges have to be returned following the owner's death. It was phased out when the school transferred to King's College. A new design was introduced in 2017.
