Nirmal Roy

Nirmal Chandra Roy first stood as a Labour party candidate in the Adelaide Ward of the London Borough of Camden in the 1978 council elections and came 6th. Four years later in 1982 he stood in the South End Ward and was again defeated, coming 4th. In 1986 he again stood in South End ward and this time he came 2nd and was one of the two councillors who were elected.

He was re-elected by coming 2nd again in the South End ward in the 1990 elections and served as Mayor of Camden for the 1990-91 year of office. In the 1994 elections he was re-elected by coming 3rd in the Bloomsbury ward and improved upon this by coming 2nd in this ward in the 1998 elections.

A campaigner against apartheid, racism and injustice he was a Director of La Resource Unit on Apartheid Limited from 8 February 1992 to 15 October 1996 and company records show his address to have been Torrington Mansions, Torrington Place, London, WC1E 7HH.

He died, aged 74 years, on 6 August 2003 and his death was registered in Westminster.
