Born Edinburgh. Journal editor and Spanish scholar. Editor of ‘The Athenaeum’ from 1871 to 1911. Following a tour of Spain in 1874, he dedicated himself to the study of Spanish literature. Died 4 Campden Hill Square, Notting Hill.
