North Camberwell Radical Club

North Camberwell Radical Club

From : "The North Camberwell Radical Club performed two functions. Firstly, it was a forum for political debate. Secondly, it was a social club for its members. The club band headed the 1890 mass May Day procession from Camberwell Green to Hyde Park under the banner ‘8 Hours’ work, 8 Hours Pay, 8 Hours rest for 8 bob a day’. In 1893, the Club took use of a building known as Albany Hall..."

The audio histories given at Art in the Park make it clear that the Club was in an impressive building, not a converted house. But Art in the Park has a photo of a house (not Albany Hall) captioned as "North Camberwell Radical Club, Albany Road 1978." This is the house which is sketched on the plaque. Albany Hall was demolished in the 1970s so we are guessing that the Club moved from the Hall to the house about that time. The audio histories must date pre-1970s.

We have no address for this house, other than Albany Road. Since we can't see it in the few remaining houses on the north of Albany Road we have to assume it was one of those demolished to create Burgess Park.
