A major 'gravity' sewer running from Hackney to Beckton. Mainly designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette after an outbreak of cholera in 1853 and the 'Great Stink' in the Thames of 1858. Our picture shows it crossing the River Lea.

Engineer. Born Charlton. Best known for the St Pancras railway shed. Died at home, High Combe, 145 Charlton Road, SE7, not far from his place of birth.
This highway was constructed in 1835 as an alternative by-pass route to the old road from London to the north, which took the gruelling haul up through the congested streets of Hampstead.
