Opened originally in 1921, by Edward Elgar, it was redesigned by the architect Joseph Emberton and rebuilt twice, in quick succession: 1936 and 1939 when Sir Thomas Beecham did the honours.
writes: "The building was destroyed on Boxing Day 1937 and reopened in 1939. HMV's flagship store moved (slightly) to 150 Oxford Street, but the old address was reacquired in 2013, and remains there now {2016}." The picture shows the store in the 1960s.
2023: report that in the 2010s HMV moved away from this original site — shuffling to a different Oxford Street location — only to move back there in 2013... then close it down again in 2019. And now, 2023, they are coming back.
