Water-colour painter. Probably born in Nottingham. 1742 joined the Ordnance office at the Tower of London as a military draughtsman. Engaged for 5 years in the military survey of Scotland. Back in London worked initially with his brother Thomas making views of London. Produced some views of Windsor collected by George IV when Prince of Wales. From 1768 chief drawing master at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. Died at home at 4 St George's Row (probably near Hanover Square).
