Awarded the VC for his heroism on 19 December 1914, age 26, while serving in the Corps of Royal Engineers. "Leaving his Sappers to finish their task he went to the aid of a West Yorkshire bombing squad in the midst of the battle; he held off the enemy, his conspicuous bravery allowing many wounded to be rescued.
