Private Dwyer, VC

Soldier. Born Edward Dwyer in Fulham. He was a private in the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. On 20th April 1915 at 'Hill 60' in Belgium, his trench was heavily attacked by German grenade throwers. He climbed out, and succeeded in dispersing the enemy with his own grenades. Earlier in the same day, he had left his trench, under heavy shell fire, and gave medical assistance to his wounded comrades. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions, and also received the Russian Cross of St. George. He was killed in action at Guillemont, France.
