Spoke repeatedly to Parliament against war with France. Outstanding figure in the Anti-Corn Law League (working with John Bright). His daughter, Ellen, married Walter Sickert. From the picture source website: He took up "on Palmerston's behalf, negotiations which led to the Anglo-French (Cobden-Chevalier) commercial treaty of 1860. This involved lengthy detailed diplomacy in Paris and a good working relationship with Emperor Napoleon III". Died of an acute attack of bronchitis at 23 Suffolk Street.
