Ruth Stacey

War dead non-military, WW2 i

Commemorated on a memorial as being a civilian who was killed in WW2. Includes mercantile marines and emergency services personnel.

Ruth Stacey

Killed in the Dulwich Library air raid aged 28. Our colleague Andrew Behan has kindly researched this lady:

Ruth M Cooke was born on 18 December 1910 and was the daughter of a Mr and Mrs Cooke who were living at the time of her death at 62 Dalmatia Road, Southend on Sea, Essex. In mid 1935 she married Walter Robert Stacey and the marriage was registered in Rochford, Essex. The 1939 England and Wales register, which gives her date of birth, shows them both living at 8 Woodwarde Road, London, S.E.22 and that her husband was a Skilled Laboratory Assistant.

The Register of WWII Civilian Deaths for the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell shows that she died, aged 28 years, on 24 September 1940 together with her husband at 8 Woodwarde Road. She was however, 29 years of age. They were both buried at the Camberwell New Cemetery and Crematorium, Brenchley Gardens, London, SE23 3RD.
