Gervase Henry Francis Maude was born on 20 March 1896 at 50 Onslow Gardens, Kensington, London, the son of Major Gerald Edward Maude (1851-1934) and Edith Caroline Maude, CBE, née Briscoe (1865-1922). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1896 in the Kensington registration district, London. On 27 April 1896 he was baptised at St Peter's Church, Cranley Gardens, Kensington, where the baptismal register confirms that the family were residing at 50 Onslow Gardens, Kensington and that his father was recorded as a gentleman.
The 1901 census shows him as aged 5 years, still living at 50 Onslow Gardens with his parents, together with a butler, a cook, a nurse, a housemaid, an under housemaid and kitchen maid. His father was recorded as the Secretary of the Shipwrecked Mariners Society.
On 15 August 1914 he received a temporary commission as a Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, but relinquished this on 17 February 1915 in order to obtain a regular commission and he attended Sandhurst Military Academy in March 1915. He joined The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment).as Second Lieutenant and was attached to their 8th Battalion when he died of wounds received in action, aged 21 years, on 9 April 1917. His body was in the Duisans British Cemetery, D339, 62161 Étrun, France.
His army effects totalling £41-9s-6d were sent to his father by 30 December 1919 and he was also entitled to a £35-0s-0d war gratuity payment. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal and these were sent to his father on 1 March 1921.
