Sidney Carman

Sidney Carman was born on 18 February 1921, a son of Alfred Richard Carman (1884-1945) and Annie Carman née McGuinness (1884-1952). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1921 in the Bethnal Green Registration District, London.

He was described as aged 4 months when his father completed his census return form on 19 June 1921. He was living at 27 Baxendale Road, Bethnal Green, with his parents and two of his siblings: Mabel Ann Carman (1917-2016) and Alfred Carman (1914-1940). His father described himself as a house decorator employed by a Mr Gould, an estate agent at 83 Gibraltar Walk, London, E2.

On 29 September 1939 when the England and Wales Register was compiled, he was shown as a single male, whose date of birth was 18 February 1921 and an insurance clerk who was living at 7 Hassard Street, London, N5, with his parents and two of his siblings: Mabel Ann Carman - a tailoring presser and Alfred Carman - an upholsterer. His father was described as a house decorator.

He was injured when a bomb was dropped on the Columbia Market air raid shelter on the night of 7th/8th September 1940 and he died on 8 September 1940 at Queen's Hospital for Children (later known as Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children), Hackney Road, Bethnal Green. His death was registered as aged 19 years in the 3rd quarter of 1940 in the Bethnal Green Registration District.

It is . His brother Alfred Carman and his sister-in-law Rosina Carman née Halfnight (1915-1940) were also killed by the same bomb.

He is shown as 'Sidney Carman aged 19 years' on the Columbia Market air raid shelter memorial in the Rose Garden, Old Market Square, Ravenscroft Park, London, E2.

He is also commemorated on the , on the , which shows him incorrectly dying on 7 September 1940 and in  that is kept just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey.
