Sir Arthur Pearson

Sir Arthur Pearson

Newspaper publisher and philanthropist. Born in Wookey, Somerset. In 1898 he founded the Daily Express, which was innovative in printing news instead of adverts on its front page. When he started to lose his sight, he published 'Pearson's Easy Dictionary' in Braille. In 1915 he founded the Blinded Soldiers and Sailors Care Committee, which was renamed St Dunstan's and is now known as Blind Veterans UK. He drowned in his bath following a fall, and losing consciousness.
