Sir Charles Reed

Sir Charles Reed

Politician. Member of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Director and Trustee of the original Abney Park Cemetery Joint Stock Company, Chairman of the Bunhill Fields Preservation Committee, associate of George Peabody. One of the managers of the 1873-75 changes at Aske’s Hospital. Died at Earlsmead, Page Green, Tottenham High Road. Buried Abney Park Cemetery.

2025: We were contacted by Tom Welsh (author of ) initially about Thomas Hugo.  Tom added: “Charles Reed sparred with Hugo over the Shadwell Shams. Reed tried to prove they were fakes, and Hugo challenged his evidence (reference ‘Fake Heritage’, chapter 8). Reed used an agent provocateur to try to discredit the mud-rakers suspected of forging lead pilgrim badges, but his methods were very dubious and really not successful. Reed's part in this ought to be better known.”
