Sir Derek Barton

Organic chemist. Born Derek Harold Richard Barton at Grenfell Sun Lane, Gravesend, Kent. After his initial studies, he spent a year at Harvard university. For his work on the relationship between conformation and chemical activity, he became joint recipient of the 1969 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. In his further career, he worked in Glasgow, France and eventually returned to the U.S.A. Knighted 1972, he died at College Station, Texas A and M University.
