Awarded the MC in WW1. Then worked in the Ministry of Health and for the last three and a half years of his service there he was in charge of the London section of the Housing Division of the Ministry. Entered the London County Council in 1934, when, as a result of public advertisement, he was appointed at the age of 38 to the position of deputy clerk of the Council.  See the for the rest of his career with the LCC.

Died aged 50 following an operation. HIs death was also recorded in with a brief quote in which he notes his appreciation of work done by female members of staff.
