Born Bishop Middleham, County Durham. Poet, playwright and public servant. He went to sea as a young man, but after finding it did not agree with his health, took up a position in the Treasury. He later joined the Colonial Service, dealing with the West Indies at the time of the abolition of slavery.
He was friends with many literary figures of his time, including Southey and Wordsworth. His writings included poetry and several historical dramas. Died Bournemouth, Dorset.
