Sir Michael Sobell

A businessman, major philanthropist, and prominent owner/breeder of thoroughbred racehorses.

Born in Galicia, now part of Poland. The family moved to London in 1903 to escape antisemitism and settled in Dalston, where the father set up as a confectioner. Sobell married in 1917. Made a fortune as a pioneer in electronics, manufacturing radio, and then television, sets. Sobell's company merged with The General Electric Company plc (GEC) making the family GEC's largest shareholder. Knighted 1972.
