Southgate local government

Southgate local government

Originally part of the parish of Edmonton. In 1881 Southgate Local Board was established and became an Urban District in 1894. Became a municipal borough in 1933, and remained so until the London Government Act of 1963, when it was merged with other areas to form the London Borough of Enfield

From 1881/2 it seems there were two buildings that were used as what we'd now call the Town Hall: the newly built Southgate Village Hall and, a little to the north, the older house on The Green.

The purpose-built municipal offices at were designed by Arthur Rowland Barker and completed in 1893. The building only ceased to function as the seat of local government when Southgate was merged with Enfield in 1963. In 2012 the Green Lanes building was being used as a , its manifestations having included Sheldrake Hospital and Cowley Police Station.
