The census return form completed by her father on 19 June 1921 shows her as Sylvia Cohen, aged 1year, 6 months and that she had been born in the St George in the East Registration District, London. She was living in four rooms at 9 Prince's Square, Stepney (later renamed as Swedenborg Square), with her parents and two siblings: Toby Cohen - a female aged 13 years who was in whole time education and Louie Cohan - a male aged 10 years, 3 months who was also in whole time education, together with a male boarder. Her father showed himself as Marks Cohan, aged 41 years, 7 months, born in Clodavia, Poland, a harness maker employed by J. Jenkovitch at 13 Backchurch Lane, Leman Street, London, E1, whilst her mother was described as Esther Cohen, aged 36 years, 3 months and who had been born in Oshanshein, Poland.

When the England and Wales Register was compiled on 29 September 1939 she was shown as Sylvia Cohen. Her date of birth was recorded as 16 December 1919 and she was a chain store shop assistant residing at 4 Palmeira Avenue, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, with her parents. Her father was recorded as a boarding house proprietor.

She died on 13 October 1940 when a high explosive German bomb fell on the Coronation Avenue air raid shelter in Stoke Newington, London.
