Temporary Leading Fireman Stephen Thomas Maynard

Temporary Leading Fireman of Poplar Fire Station who died, aged 26 years, fighting a fire aboard the petroleum gas tanker the M. V. Rudi M, at Limehouse Basin on 25 January 1980. 50 firemen had been called to the scene but, with the blaze out of control, they were being withdrawn, when the hold collapsed and Stephen was lost. Stephen was from East Ham.

Stephen Thomas Maynard was born on 7 March 1953 the eldest child of Richard David Maynard (1929-2005) and Doreen C. Maynard née Wheatley (b.1929). His birth was registered in the West Ham registration district, Essex. His siblings included David J. Maynard (b.1955) and Alisa Jane C. Maynard (1966).

He married Patricia R. E. Peck (b.1953) in the 3rd quarter of 1974 in the Newham registration district.

Probate records confirm that he had lived at 62 Lichfield Road, London, E5 and that when administration of his estate was granted on 14 November 1980 his effects totalled £3,439.
